Buying treats can become an expensive ritual on a shopping list, and honestly dogs don’t care about the brand or where the treats come from, and really especially don’t care if its gluten free. They only care about the fact they are getting food, aside from dinner. Making the best doggy treats is easy and fairly cheap to make, plus you get the benefit of knowing exactly what is going into these treats. Within thirty minutes your puppy could be enjoying a special homemade snack.
Here’s what you’ll need :
3/4 cup wheat germ
3/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 tablespoon brewers’ yeast
1 (3.5 ounce) jar pureed liver baby food
1/4 cup water or as needed
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
In a medium bowl, stir together the wheat germ, milk powder, egg, yeast and liver baby food (why this is even a baby food flavor I will never know..I’m thinking that feeding this to your child is how kids grow up to be bitter people.). Add water if necessary to make a workable dough. Too much water will make a biscuit soup and it’s not as appetizing as it sounds. A teaspoon full of the mixture on the cookie sheet, per biscuit seems to be the right amount, but discuss this with your dog…he may have different ideas.
Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from cookie sheet to cool on wire racks. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for the dogs, these treats do not have preservatives so they will need to be used within the week. I’m sure your dog won’t protest to this turn of events at all!
